Some moments stay with you long after they pass. For TKGians, Racial Harmony Day is always one of the most memorable celebrations of the school year. Around every corner, the corridors came alive with a vibrant tapestry of kebayas, qipaos and saris, their elegant embroidery and shimmering sequins adding colour to the celebration. “Where else will you find a lively atmosphere during school events and that strong sense of sisterhood in a school?” shares Emily Koh (4R6).
Indeed, the school buzzed with excitement as students hurried between classrooms during lunch breaks, cameras in hand, ready to capture memorable moments of our cultural diversity.
Besides dressing up, students also had the opportunity to try out various traditional crafts such as Chinese Fan Painting for the Secondary Twos. Students designed their own fans, proudly expressing their creativity through unique colours and patterns. According to Nur Natalya Nasarudin (2C3), “I felt that I enjoyed the fan painting activity pretty well as I not only managed to draw something by my own hands but also spent time chatting and sharing the paint with my tablemates! Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience to do this activity together with friends in my class!” Her sentiment was very much shared with the rest of the school; many could be seen excitedly showing off their fans with one another during their munch break.
To end the celebration, students gathered at the canteen for a lovely lunchtime concert featuring two musicians and a vocalist playing along to various ASEAN songs. “Watching everybody come together and sing to the different songs was a special moment because the school spirit has never been stronger,” reflects Megan Ng (3H4). Many students gathered around the performance, clapping, singing and even dancing together as the lively atmosphere spread throughout the canteen. To end the concert on a high note, the National Day Song, Home, was performed, with as we belted out the lyrics with pride.
And of course, what school celebration is complete without taking pictures in the field? As the bell rang, the energy and excitement did not die down just yet. Students streamed onto the field, arms around one another, posing for photographs beneath the bright afternoon sun. As laughter echoed across the field, friends captured memories they would treasure long after the celebration had ended.
“I think this celebration is one of the most meaningful, because it shows how our school community isn't divided by differences, and that we can come together as one to embrace each race and ethnicity,” shares Nurun Nuha (3H4).
Our Racial Harmony Day celebration served as a reminder to take the time to appreciate our community and diversity, with friendships built not on race or religion, but on authentic connections and shared experiences.
